Heritage, visit, Castle, Fort en Bas-RhinCité Médiévale de StrasbourgVisite.org 67000 Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin)Between 1202 and 1220, the town gained new districts around the churches of Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune and Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux. Various fortified towers were also built at this period, with these only disappearing from the town's urban landscape during the 19th century. From 1228 onwards, it was the turn of the market garden districts to be absorbed into the city. The Finkwiller, the quai des Bateliers, the rue des Bouchers or the rue d'Or all bear witness to the many guilds which existed at the time, and which were vital to the life of the townspeople in Strasbourg. These routes were surrounded with walls around the same period. The defensive system of the "Ponts Couverts" (covered bridges) was also built at this time. The four current towers were part of the ramparts and were linked by bridges covered with a wooden roof, which disappeared during the 18th century. These were home to the guardrooms but were also used as prisons. Another monument from this period is the Porte de l'Hôpital. This stage of the town's enlargement was only completed in 1344. Around 1370-1390, at the end of the One Hundred Years War, the population feared invasion by the bands of looters which roamed France. Consequently, the town's leaders decided to protect the western and northern parts of the town.
